Urban League Mission: Social and
Economic Equality |
|
I have a dream that
one day this nation will rise up and live out the true
meaning of its creed: "We hold these truths to be
self-evident: that all men are created equal." I have a
dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia the sons
of former slaves and the sons of former slaveowners will
be able to sit down together at a table of brotherhood.
I have a dream that one day even the state of
Mississippi, a desert state, sweltering with the heat of
injustice and oppression, will be transformed into an
oasis of freedom and justice. I have a dream that my
four children will one day live in a nation where they
will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the
content of their
character. Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.,
Foot Soldier in the Civil Rights

| Dear
Urban League Family,
Are we ready? I pray that we
are because the time is now. Our
communities need us and our talents
today. We all bring something different
to the struggle, but we must bring those
talents to bear right now and each day. Over the
last seven (7) years, the population in
Dallas has grown by 16%, but the number of
families in poverty have grown by over
40%. It is now our resolve to affect real
change in our communities, but we need you to
succeed.
Excerpt from an article by Marc Morial:
Much has been written about the giant shoulders
Barack Obama stands on as he prepares to become
America's first Black President. Everyone from
Abraham Lincoln and FDR to Dr. Martin Luther King has
been cited as inspirations. But we must be
reminded that Obama's path to the White House was not
only paved by the courageous lives of these great
leaders but also by the transformative powers of the
volunteer. Some might argue that there has been no
more poignant or effective way of conveying the dignity
of the African American experience and building bridges
of understanding than through getting involved, and
working together towards equality for all.
Will you join us?
Regards,
Anthony Murphy
